Youth ministry and mission programs are entrusted with the spiritual upbringing of the young people who participate in them.  Those working with young people are first and foremost accountable to God, as well as their wider communities, for the well-being and spiritual formation of our children. The Church must be a secure and safe environment where young people can grow and mature in the Faith. While we can never completely eliminate the possibility of abuse or injury, we can take concrete steps to ensure that our Churches are as safe as possible.  With so many factors beyond our control, we need to do everything possible to protect our children and youth from abuse, negligence, and accidents.

The first step in protection is to properly screen those adults who will be working with children. In all programs involving young people, we must screen and complete a background check for each visitor, missionary, and clergy, who serves in ministry settings. We recommend the clergy set the example for missionaries, the lay people, with whom they work with. This not only sets the proper tone for the mission experience, it also allows the team to know that all are subject to the same guidelines.

The Mother of God is the “Protectress of all Christians” and especially our young. May the Theotokos continually intercede on our behalf.
